Dutch Scholars for Palestine hands over petition for Gaza students to Cabinet, will report Marcuszower to police for incitement

This morning the Board of Dutch Scholars for Palestine handed over a petition by DSP and De Goede Zaak with nearly 25.000 signatures to the Director of the Main Directorate for Consular and Visa Affairs, as the representative of the Cabinet. The organisation of scholars at Dutch Higher Education institutions is urging the Dutch government to organise the urgent evacuation of Palestinians from Gaza who have permission to study, undertake research or work in the Netherlands but who are unable to leave the Gaza Strip without assistance.
The petition concerns 48 Palestinians from Gaza who have valid visas for the Netherlands. Their visas have been ready for them to collect since February, but the documents are being held at the Dutch Embassy in Amman, Jordan, and without the help of the Dutch government they are unable to collect them.
On 30th April a judge in Den Haag ruled that the government must make efforts to enable the Palestinians to leave the Gaza strip and travel to the Netherlands. The Council of State has also ruled that the government should provide consular assistance. According to Eva Bezem and Wil Eikelboom, lawyers who are representing a number of the applicants, it is a straightforward process for the Netherlands to put their names on a list of people authorised to travel on a bus to Amman.
DSP points out that its demand is widely supported by the academic world, many diplomats and former diplomats, politicians, the universities and more than 25.000 signatories, to evacuate the visa holders from Gaza and bring them safely to the Netherlands, NOW.
DSP also announced that it will lodge a formal police complaint against the notorious member of Parliament Gidi Markuszower, who said in an interview with Left Laser that "maximum force" should be used against Palestinian refugees to prevent them from coming over the Dutch border. DSP considers this to be incitement to hatred and violence.
The Chair of DSP, Yolande Jansen, said:
"While we are campaigning for Palestinians in Gaza to be able to come to the Netherlands to work or study, Markuszower is inciting violence against them. This is a disgusting assault on the human rights of people who are trying to survive an ongoing genocide."

Het bestuur van Dutch Scholars for Palestine heeft vrijdagochtend 22 mei een petitie met bijna 25.000 handtekeningen overhandigd aan de directeur van de Hoofddirectie Consulaire en Visumzaken, als vertegenwoordiger van het kabinet. Met de petitie roept de vereniging van wetenschappers de Nederlandse regering op om de evacuatie mogelijk te maken van Palestijnen uit Gaza die in Nederland mogen studeren, onderzoek doen of werken, maar de Gazastrook niet zelfstandig kunnen verlaten.
Het gaat om 48 Palestijnen uit Gaza die beschikken over een geldig visum voor Nederland. Hun visa liggen al sinds februari klaar, maar bevinden zich op de Nederlandse ambassade in Amman, Jordanië. Zonder actieve hulp van de Nederlandse overheid kunnen zij hun documenten niet ophalen.
Op 30 april oordeelde de voorzieningenrechter van de Rechtbank Den Haag dat de regering zich moest inspannen om deze Palestijnen in staat te stellen de Gazastrook te verlaten en naar Nederland te reizen. Ook de Raad van State heeft zich inmiddels over de zaak uitgesproken. Volgens Eva Bezem en Wil Eikelboom, de advocaten die een aantal Palestijnse visumaanvragers bijstaan, is de benodigde stap overzichtelijk: Nederland moet hun namen laten plaatsen op een lijst van mensen die toestemming krijgen om per bus naar Amman te reizen.
Dutch Scholars for Palestine wijst erop dat haar oproep breed wordt gedragen door de academische wereld, diplomaten, oud-diplomaten, politici en inmiddels bijna 25.000 ondertekenaars: help deze mensen nu om Gaza te verlaten en veilig naar Nederland te reizen.
Tegelijkertijd kondigt Dutch Scholars for Palestine aan aangifte te doen tegen beruchte Tweede Kamerlid Gidi Markuszower. In een interview met een journalist van Left Laser stelde Markuszower dat er "maximaal geweld" moet worden gebruikt tegen Palestijnse vluchtelingen om te voorkomen dat zij de Nederlandse grens oversteken. Dutch Scholars for Palestine beschouwt deze uitspraak als het aanzetten tot haat en geweld.
Yolande Jansen, voorzitter van Dutch Scholars for Palestine, zegt hierover:
"Terwijl wij campagne voeren voor Palestijnen uit Gaza die in Nederland mogen studeren, onderzoek doen of werken, roept Markuszower op tot geweld tegen Palestijnse vluchtelingen. Dat is een afschuwelijke aanval op de mensenrechten van mensen die proberen te overleven tijdens een voortdurende genocide."
